Understanding: NSSI: The Basics and Treatment Failures
April 28 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$49 - $109
Join Angela Kahn, Founder of SII, as she presents morning and afternoon seminars on understanding individuals and families struggling with self-injury.
MORNING SESSION: 10am – 1pm
Therapists are reporting an alarming rise in cases of self-injury. Unfortunately, there is an abundance of confusing and misleading information on the internet that attempts to explain what it is and what it’s not. We’ve been treating self-injury for over a decade, and can lend an evidence-based, sophisticated, clinical lens to understanding the nature and etiology of this frightening behavior. Before you can treat, you need the basics. Angela Kahn will review the recent literature on prevalence, correlates, and trends, as well as define the behavior in a way that helps you to distinguish it from other clinical presentations.
AFTERNOON SESSION: 2pm – 4pm
There is no empirically supported treatment model for self-injury currently in use. DBT has only shown mild and short-term success, recovery models fail, and behavioral approaches don’t stick. This session, facilitated by Angela Kahn, will offer a window into the mind of a self-injurer that explains current treatment failures, and make an argument for a systems approach that more closely matches this unique interior landscape.
